New migrants – support through mentoring
“When I see you through my eyes I think we are different. When I see you through my heart I know we are the same”. Doe Zantamata
Multi-cultural diversity enriches our community, but the challenges facing new migrants as they settle in are immense. Apart from the day-to-day practicalities of where to shop, how to get around, and how to communicate, there are the myriad cultural differences that can hamper understanding and acceptance. Mentoring is a way to open our hearts, giving new migrants the practical and emotional support they need to take their place and play a valued role in our communities.
Interactionz offers the benefit of years of experience and skill in providing a personalised mentoring service to make this process easier. Our mentoring service helps and supports new migrants to take practical steps to develop the skills they need to overcome barriers and work towards living a more rewarding life, which is more integrated into the community around them.
Our service includes three key elements that are particularly relevant for supporting new migrants:
- Planning. In moving to a new community it’s important to understand and embrace the ways of your new community. However it’s equally important to retain your sense of self and the cultural identity that makes you unique. Our personalised planning processes, PATH & MAPS will support you in visualising the way you’d like your new life to look, helping to integrate the things that are important to you, drawing on both the new, and your old, lives.
- Mentoring. Once you’ve identified the things that are important to you, your personal mentor will walk with you as you work towards each of your goals, step-by-step. For some, these goals might focus on the practicalities of your new life, such as finding your way around, improving language skills, or knowing where to shop. Others might be more interested in finding a great job, joining local clubs or enjoying new recreational activities. Whatever is important to you, your mentor will provide guidance, support and give you the confidence to pursue your goals.
- Relationships. A key part of our approach centres around helping you to develop a natural support base within your community. We do this by helping you to connect with people with similar interests and skills who act as natural supports. This is a key part of our philosophy and we have many years’ experience facilitating this process in a way that enriches the lives of all involved.
Interactionz are happy to work directly with new migrants or to provide contracted services through other community organisations. We are also able to provide training in all aspects of mentoring so that your team can act as mentors.
