The Art of Community Mentoring

This generative learning experience has been designed to support learners to become more confident and competent community mentors as they practise in a dynamic and ever-changing environment.

This course will include understanding the role of the mentor, the mentoring process and give learners some basic mentoring tools for their toolkits.

Interactionz offers multiple series of three modules, all of which are designed around the three areas of focus:

  1. Self-awareness for staff. This is about understanding ourselves – our values, our beliefs, our behaviour – and the way in which we impact on others and the world around us. Self-awareness, reflective and reflexive skills provide an essential base for our way of working.
  2. Self-determination for the persons we serve. This is about empowerment and shifting the authority and control from us as ‘the service’ to the person we serve. The principles of Enabling Good Lives and The Lightest Touch are the cornerstones of our current best practice.
  3. Community strengthening. This is about discovering and building on the strengths and assets that already exist so that everyone is able to participate in and contribute to their communities. Community mapping and networking are ways to ‘build the bridge from both sides.’

Enjoy gaining new insights and new learnings to generate new actions and new ways in mentoring practice.

Participants must already be working within a community organisation and may identify as being a mentor, carer, support worker, facilitator or alike. Courses are available to be delivered at our in-house training rooms in Hamilton or anywhere in New Zealand.

PATH & MAPS Planning Tools

This three-day interactive learning experience will train participants to be competent and confident PATH and MAPS facilitators.

PATH and MAPS are graphic facilitation tools for ‘big picture’ and whole-of-life planning for individuals or groups (eg family/whānau, teams, community groups or organisations).

Each tool involves a co-facilitated process to develop a comprehensive plan in pictorial form that explores a desired future (whether the aspiration is an individual’s good life or a collective’s highest purpose) and identifies action steps to achieve positive and possible outcomes.

The graphic facilitation process means that PATH and MAPS are accessible planning tools for all persons, regardless of communication abilities, and promotes the principles of Enabling Good Lives.

The integrity of the PATH and MAPS processes requires that all facilitators have had a personal experience of being a PATHfinder or MAPmaker before facilitating the process for others.

The three-day workshop includes:

  • Introduction to graphic facilitation techniques
  • Introduction to the philosophy of PATH and MAPS
  • Demonstration of PATH or MAPS
  • Practise of facilitiation of PATH and MAPS (each participant will have an experience of being a PATHfinder or MAPmaker, a process facilitator and a graphic facilitator)
  • Overview of other tools using graphic facilitation techniques
  • Review and debrief of learning.

This training is available anywhere in New Zealand and no previous experience is necessary.

FOCUS Planning Tool

This two-day interactive learning experience will train participants to be FOCUS facilitators.

FOCUS is a graphic facilitation tool that can be utilised for whole-of-life planning for individuals or groups (eg family/whānau, teams, community groups or organisations).

FOCUS is a comprehensive planning process, facilitated utilising the power of graphics, that explores a desired future and identifies action steps towards this. FOCUS can be facilitated:

  • by one or two facilitators
  • for one individual over one sitting or multiple sittings
  • for a group of persons over one sitting or multiple sittings.

The graphic facilitation process means that FOCUS is an accessible planning tool for all persons, regardless of communication abilities, and promotes the principles of Enabling Good Lives.

The two-day workshop includes:

  • Introduction to graphic facilitation techniques
  • Introduction to the philosophy of FOCUS
  • Demonstration of FOCUS
  • Practise of facilitation of FOCUS (each participant will have an experience of being a FOCUS person, a process facilitator and a graphic facilitator)
  • Review and debrief of learning.

This training is available anywhere in New Zealand and no previous experience is necessary.

What customers say...

“The atmosphere created by the facilitators was very non-judgmental in every way. There were no egos in the room to get in the way. It was presented simply and I grasped the concepts. When I questioned a point, the facilitators answered the question or query honestly and I was never made to feel like I was stupid at any time. They created a space I believe we felt safe in. Well done!!”

"What a pleasure it was to meet you [Janelle], Danielle and Danae. You all ran an amazing and upbeat program that was both useful to us and made sure we had full comprehension of the process (nothing like having it done to you to fully understand it right!?). Thanks for your amazing hospitality and everything you taught us."

- Gaby Hyland, Barnardos

“Thank you for your professionalism, positive reinforcement and facilitation of the PATH training during the 3 days. It was a privilege to share this journey with you both and the staff in attendance. Will definitely keep in the touch. Some of the staff have already started their journey (exercising), which is awesome.”

- Tatai Allen, Ngati Ranginui Iwi Society Inc

“I enjoyed the time taken to be reflective of our practice as a team. I enjoyed the various tools and frameworks that we discussed and the benefits of using them with the people we support were made very evident. I enjoyed the interactive nature of the training, being able to hear from my colleagues about their ideas and thoughts around different aspects of community mentoring.”
